the "lonely & forgotten"
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:
to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep
oneself from being polluted by the world.” --James 1:27 (NIV)
After a season of the LORD patiently and kindly replacing our plans for providingLIFE.org with His plans, it seems a simple theme has emerged for this ministry: “to look after orphans and widows in their distress..." For us, this looks like ministering in two seemingly different, but oddly similar areas--Nursing Homes and Juvenile Prisons.
During the summer of 2011, we felt the LORD speak to our hearts that His desire was for us to focus on the "lonely & forgotten." We knew instantly that we were supposed to minister into the lives of those living in nursing homes and it seemed like overnight the LORD opened up a door for us to serve as chaplains at a local nursing facility. We enjoy the ability to build on-going relationships with the residents and hold a weekly Bible study for them. We also enjoy visiting other facilities in our surrounding area or stopping along the way on our travels across the United States to minister in music and share fellowship.
We were surprised when the LORD expanded our calling to include Juvenile Prison ministry, but we quickly discovered that the prisons hold many spiritual "orphans" that need to hear of God's love. Four times a year, our team holds a 3-day Christian retreat within a prison, where we lead worship for the youth offenders and teach them about God's redemptive plan for their lives. We are blessed to return to the prisons on a monthly basis to follow up with these young people and maintain contact through letter writing.
